Dr. Somnath Bhattacharyya
Somnath is currently working as a senior professor and the founding director of Nano-scale Transport Physics Laboratory, at the school of physics, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. specializing in fundamentals of nano-quantum transport physics and related technology of carbon materials. Having completed his PHD degree in Condensed Matter Physics from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Somnath has spent several years in the US, England and Germany has a researcher.
He specializes in quantum transport properties of disordered and complex systems. His main contribution in science includes demonstration of novel carbon based tunnel devices and theoretical model of quantum transport in disordered carbon system which can be useful in developing artificial neural network and carbon based quantum computers. However he has extended his research interest ranging from early universe to quantum artificial intelligence. He found a strong overlapping of his research in carbon and the fire AGNI described in our ancient scripture ‘Rig Veda’ which inspired him to think about a scientific model of ‘Creation’
His interests in Eastern mysticism especially on the How of Creation that corresponds to the processes of manifestation, sustainability and dissolution ('laya') have brought him in front of the Great Gate of Cosmic Illumination where he seeks those answers from the point of view of modern science and ancient wisdom, mainly the Vedas, Kapila's Samkhya, The Bhagavat and Bramha Samahita coupled with core Advaita philosophy. From extensive travelling around the world he tried to collect artifacts in support of the model of ‘creation’ described in ancient scriptures.
At I-ternity foundation, as a core member, Somnath wants to explore Shristi Tattva (Creation) by doing research both theoretical and experimental on Quantum Matter, Light Matter Interactions, Superconducting transitions and quantum biology to create a new understanding on Quantum Consciousness, Sri Aurobindo's Supramental Matter (New Matter), Supermind based on principles of creation described in the ancient text of Sri Sri Chandi. He thinks that a new scientific understanding of the Divine Feminine Principle will open up both the contexts of duality and non-duality simultaneously and that proper illumination from science and spirituality can help transcend that as well. The inspiration from The Devi/Sri Sri Chandi comes as a direct transmission in Markandeya Purana: ''I resemble in form Brahman/From me emanates the world/Which has the Spirit of Prakriti and Purusha/I am empty not empty/I am delight and non-delight/I am knowledge and ignorance/I am Brahman and not Brahman".
Dr. Bhattacharyya's inspiring ideas to both theoretically explore and experiment have opened up new possibilities to seek the highest knowledge of transcendental wisdom at I-ternity Foundation. As Sri Aurobindo says ''What then is there between this material substance and that pure substance'' is what we all explore to find out here. ''For we do not leap from one to the other, we do not pass at once from the inconscient to absolute consciousness. There must be and there are grades between inconscient substance and utterly self-conscious self-extension, as between the principle of Matter and the principle of Spirit." (Life Divine, Sri Aurobindo)
We have to find out......
